Indian Army Rank Wise Salary

The Indian army rank wise salary structure can be tricky to understand. To fully understand it, you will need to be familiar with few terms, like basic pay, grade pay, gross salary etc. But first, you need to know the rank hierarchy of Indian army.

If you are recruited as Soldier GD, then first you will undergo the training period. And this is how you will proceed:

Sepoy/rifleman > lance naik > naik > havildar > naib subedar > subedar > subedar major (SM).

If you don’t have the graduation degree, and didn’t had science in class 12th, and join Indian army as soldier GD, then SM is the highest post you will reach. And you will retire as Honorary captain (if reached the SM post).

Now, if you join Indian army after clearing the NDA or CDS exam, then again, you will have to undergo the training period, and later this is how your post will increase:

Lieutenant > captain > major > lieutenant colonel > colonel > brigadier > major general > lieutenant general.

There are two other prestigious posts, but there are different criteria for them. Now let’s understand the difficult terms we talked about.

Understanding Government Salary Structure Of India

Let me make it simple for you. The amount that you get on your hand in cash is gross salary, and the gross salary is the sum of components like grade pay, basic pay, monthly allowances etc. Or we can say that the salary of Government employees is the sum of different components, i.e. basic pay, grade pay, dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other miscellaneous allowances.

What Is Grade Pay And Basic Pay?

Grade pay is the amount which government employees receive depending on the category, pay band,  and class of employee. Grade pay is calculated on the basis of position and class of an employ according to 7th pay commission.

Basic pay is the sum of grade pay and pay in pay band, i.e Basic pay = grade pay + pay in the pay band.

Difference Between Basic Pay And Grade Pay

Let me clear the basic difference between the Basic pay and Grade Pay:

  • Grade pay remains fixed until the next promotion, while on the other hand, basic pay changes every year.
  • Grade pay gets changed with respect to ability and position while pay scale is used for the measurement of pay.
  • Grade pay is a new term in 6th pay commission. Basic pay is the minimum remuneration given to the employee which changes from time to time.

What are extra allowances?

Government employees are given the compensation for activities that will need expenditure like, transportation facilities, House rental allowance(HRA) for house rents etc. These are called extra allowances.

Apart from other facilities like housing, food etc. an army soldier receives extra allowances for other things like, for Kit Maintenance, a soldier of Indian Army get Rs. 400 per month. Transport Allowance of Rs. 1600 to Rs 3200, Field Area Allowance Rs 25% of Basic Pay, Counterinsurgency Rs 6300, High Altitude Rs. 5600, Siachen Rs 14000, Flying Pay Rs 9000, Parachute Pay Rs 1200, Special Forces Rs 9000 per month etc.

Now you have got a basic Idea about how to calculate government salary, so, let’s see the Indian army rank wise salary structure.

Indian army Rank Wise Salary Structure

Here is the salary according to the rank hierarchy mentioned above. Please note that on hand salary is the sum and deduction of many factors like DA, PF etc.

Training Period

Anyone who is recruited in Indian army has to go for the training first irrespective of the post. The candidates are given stipend instead of calling it salary. The stipend of training period can be between 15000 to 21000, depending on the pay band of the rank in which the candidate has been recruited.

Pay Scale Of JCO/OR  Or PBOR (personnel below officer rank)

All the ranks that fall under the category of JCO/OR, below is the pay scale and salary structure of all those ranks.

#Sepoy or Rifleman (Pay Band 1)

Anyone between 17 and a half to 21 years of age can be a soldier irrespective of caste, color, and creed. You Just have to pass the Metric and fit in the eligibility criteria in order to join Indian Army as a sepoy, you have to pass the written exam and physical test as well.

Havildar is the last post of pay band 1, and this rank has the highest grade pay in its group. Generally, people consider the havildar rank of the army and havildar rank of police equal, but it is not so. This rank of the army is much more sophisticated and much more paid than police.

Pay Band : 9300-34800

#Subedar (Pay Band 2)

Pay Band : 9300-34800

Grade pay : 4600

military service : 2000

X group pay: 1400

X group pay: 1400

Cash In hand : 65,000 (approx.)

Subedar Major or SM is the highest post to which a GD recruited candidate can reach (if not given any exam for promotion to officer rank). It is the highest grade pay earning post in the 2nd pay band of the army, with grade pay of Rs. 4800.

This is the structure of JCO/OR, now let’s have a look at the salary structure of army officers.

# Major General (Pay Band 4)

Pay Band : 37400-67000

# Lieutenant General

Pay band- 67000 to 79000

A lieutenant general gets the basic pay between 67000 to 79000. No grade pay is given to this post. 3% of increment is given each year to the lieutenant general until the pay reaches the maximum pay limit.
