Every year, army releases the notification for thousands of recruitment, and lakhs of aspirants apply for the recruitment even without collecting the full information. In a research, it was found that most of the aspirant participating in army bharti didn’t know what will be their starting salary if recruited.

Check if you are eligible to apply for army.

Have you ever thought how much army a soldier earns? to know the salary package of Indian Army is very important for all those, who want to work for it. If you are going to join Indian Army, then first recognize the salary package and then make your decision.

Indian Army Rank Wise Salary

The Indian army rank wise salary structure can be tricky to understand. To fully understand it, you will need to be familiar with few terms, like basic pay, grade pay, gross salary etc. But first, you need to know the rank hierarchy of Indian army.

If you are recruited as Soldier GD, then first you will undergo the training period. And this is how you will proceed:

Sepoy/rifleman > lance naik > naik > havildar > naib subedar > subedar > subedar major (SM).

If you don’t have the graduation degree, and didn’t had science in class 12th, and join Indian army as soldier GD, then SM is the highest post you will reach. And you will retire as Honorary captain (if reached the SM post).

Now, if you join Indian army after clearing the NDA or CDS exam, then again, you will have to undergo the training period, and later this is how your post will increase:

Lieutenant > captain > major > lieutenant colonel > colonel > brigadier > major general > lieutenant general.

There are two other prestigious posts, but there are different criteria for them. Now let’s understand the difficult terms we talked about.

Understanding Government Salary Structure Of India

Let me make it simple for you. The amount that you get on your hand in cash is gross salary, and the gross salary is the sum of components like grade pay, basic pay, monthly allowances etc. Or we can say that the salary of Government employees is the sum of different components, i.e. basic pay, grade pay, dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other miscellaneous allowances.

What Is Grade Pay And Basic Pay?

Grade pay is the amount which government employees receive depending on the category, pay band,  and class of employee. Grade pay is calculated on the basis of position and class of an employ according to 7th pay commission.

Basic pay is the sum of grade pay and pay in pay band, i.e Basic pay = grade pay + pay in the pay band.

Difference Between Basic Pay And Grade Pay

Let me clear the basic difference between the Basic pay and Grade Pay:

  • Grade pay remains fixed until the next promotion, while on the other hand, basic pay changes every year.
  • Grade pay gets changed with respect to ability and position while pay scale is used for the measurement of pay.
  • Grade pay is a new term in 6th pay commission. Basic pay is the minimum remuneration given to the employee which changes from time to time.

What are extra allowances?

Government employees are given the compensation for activities that will need expenditure like, transportation facilities, House rental allowance(HRA) for house rents etc. These are called extra allowances.

Apart from other facilities like housing, food etc. an army soldier receives extra allowances for other things like, for Kit Maintenance, a soldier of Indian Army get Rs. 400 per month. Transport Allowance of Rs. 1600 to Rs 3200, Field Area Allowance Rs 25% of Basic Pay, Counterinsurgency Rs 6300, High Altitude Rs. 5600, Siachen Rs 14000, Flying Pay Rs 9000, Parachute Pay Rs 1200, Special Forces Rs 9000 per month etc.

Now you have got a basic Idea about how to calculate government salary, so, let’s see the Indian army rank wise salary structure.

Indian army Rank Wise Salary Structure

Here is the salary according to the rank hierarchy mentioned above. Please note that on hand salary is the sum and deduction of many factors like DA, PF etc.

Training Period

Anyone who is recruited in Indian army has to go for the training first irrespective of the post. The candidates are given stipend instead of calling it salary. The stipend of training period can be between 15000 to 21000, depending on the pay band of the rank in which the candidate has been recruited.

Pay Scale Of JCO/OR  Or PBOR (personnel below officer rank)

All the ranks that fall under the category of JCO/OR, below is the pay scale and salary structure of all those ranks.

#Sepoy or Rifleman (Pay Band 1)

Pay Band : 5200 – 20200

Grade pay : 1800

The sepoy is the initial rank in the Indian Army, but still get a good amount of money as monthly salary. Being a ground troop, the sepoy is the primary fighting force in the world. Our country is full of energetic youngsters who are recruited every year as a sepoy by open rallies in Indian Army.

Anyone between 17 and a half to 21 years of age can be a soldier irrespective of caste, color, and creed. You Just have to pass the Metric and fit in the eligibility criteria in order to join Indian Army as a sepoy, you have to pass the written exam and physical test as well.

#Lance Naik (Pay Band 1)

Pay Band : 5200 – 20200

Grade pay : 2000

military service : 2000

X group pay: 1400.

Cash In hand : 30,000 (approx.)

A sepoy is promoted to the post of lance naik. There is not too much difference between sepoy and lance naik. Both comes under same pay band, but lance naik gets the GP of Rs. 2000 which is 200 more than that of sepoy.

#Naik (Pay Band 1)

#Havildar (Pay Band 1)

Pay Band : 5200 – 20200

Grade pay : 2800

military service : 2000

X group pay: 1400

Cash In hand : 40,000 (approx.)

Havildar is the last post of pay band 1, and this rank has the highest grade pay in its group. Generally, people consider the havildar rank of the army and havildar rank of police equal, but it is not so. This rank of the army is much more sophisticated and much more paid than police.

#Naib Subedar (Pay Band 2)

Pay Band : 9300-34800

Grade pay : 4200

Reaching this post means a significant hike in salary since this post comes under the second pay band. The basic pay is almost 60% more than other posts that are mentioned above. And don’t be mistaken by the name of the post because, like havaldar post, this one too is a very sophisticated post.

#Subedar (Pay Band 2)

Pay Band : 9300-34800

Grade pay : 4600

military service : 2000

X group pay: 1400

Cash In hand : 50,000 (approx.)

Subedar is considered as the most prestigious post after SM. Till you reach this post, you will gain a lot of experience. The basic pay of Subedar is 4600 (200 more than naib subedar).

#Subedar Major (SM)

Pay Band : 9300-34800

Grade pay : 4800

military service : 2000

X group pay: 1400

Cash In hand : 65,000 (approx.)

Subedar Major or SM is the highest post to which a GD recruited candidate can reach (if not given any exam for promotion to officer rank). It is the highest grade pay earning post in the 2nd pay band of the army, with grade pay of Rs. 4800.

This is the structure of JCO/OR, now let’s have a look at the salary structure of army officers.

Pay Scale/Salary of Army Officers

An army personnel in the rank of officer is respected everywhere, not only that, the salaries of army officers are very attractive. Even the beginners enjoy the pay band 3 benefits of salary. Military service pay : 6000

Reaching the post of brigadier means that you have served your country for a long time. This is a prestigious post of Army with grade pay of 8900.

# Major General (Pay Band 4)

Pay Band : 37400-67000

Grade pay : 10000

Though the military service pay benefits are not included in this post, but this is the only rank where the officer gets a grade pay of 10,000. And not to mention, a Major general in Army gets enormous respect all over the world.

# Lieutenant General

Pay band- 67000 to 79000

A lieutenant general gets the basic pay between 67000 to 79000. No grade pay is given to this post. 3% of increment is given each year to the lieutenant general until the pay reaches the maximum pay limit.

The cash in hand salary are just the approximation, they may vary depending on extra allowances like high altitude.

Let me tell you a fact that every rank up to Lieutenant General gets an increment of three percent every year with extra monthly allowances like Kit Maintenance allowance, Transport Allowance, Field Area Allowance, Counter Insurgency, Special Forces, etc.

I am a bca student.I would like to join Indian army as an officer but in 12th standard I do not have subject like maths and physics. Hence am I eligible for CDS Examination or not? Please tell me.
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Dnyanesh.
It is not compulsory to have these subjects(Maths and Physics) in 12th to appear for CDS exam. But if you have not select Maths and Physics in your intermediate examination or even in graduation then you are only eligible to apply for Indian Army and Officer Training Academy and not in Indian Navy and Air Force. As, you have mentioned that you look forward to join Indian army as officer then you can apply for CDS exam.

    Hello sir/madam,
I’m Shiva Prasad, age 22yrs. Height 165cm, Wt 56kgs. I’ve completed Btech in Mechanical Engg. with 57.36% marks. In my intermediate college(PCM), I secured 64.7%. In 10th class 83%. I want to join in any defence/armed forces and serve to the nation and give better life to my family. As I’m a ward of deceased BSF Personnel, from my childhood I’m so much interested attracted towards defence/armed forces and have habituated life with that surrounding HQ living nature. So please help me sir/madam in finding ways and options for me to join any defence/central armed police forces as per my educational qualifications and age.
    Thanking you sir/madam

    1. Hi Shiva.
As, you have mentioned that you have completed your B.Tech(graduation)and you aspires to join Indian army then your best option is CDS(Common Defense Services)exam. CDS is a written exam conducted twice every year by UPSC. It is meant to select officers for Army, Navy and Air Force. Men and women both can apply for CDS and the best part is about CDS is that there is no percentage bar for it. While men can apply for Army (IMA and OTA) Navy (INA) and Air Force (AFA), women can only apply for Army (OTA). The age limit criteria is different for IMA, OTA, INA and AFA. For IMA it is 19-24 years. The education qualification required for IMA and OTA(Officer Training Academy) is Degree of a recognized University or equivalent. So, at present you can apply for CDS exam and join Indian army as officer.

  5. Hello sir,
I am pursuing my B.sc degree and I am in my 2nd year as of now. I want to get into the Indian army and the only possible option at present is the CDS. But I would like to mention that I did not have math as my subject in class 12 and so I wont be able to clear the IMA but I’ll give my best into OTA. The doubt that I have is, the officers recruited from OTA have a short service commission so is there any way or parameter that can be fulfilled to get the permanent commission afterwards?
    Waiting for your reply sir.
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Subhagya.
It is not rare but it is common that those apply for PC, get it but there is an exception. Your performance in last ten years will be reviewed. If you perform right from beginning, that you got to get absorbed in permanent commission, it will automatically be reflected in your performance. If you make a decision that you got to quit after ten years, same will come in your ACR. You get into army based on merits, you get promoted in army based on merits so obviously you would get permanent commission if you have merits. If the performance of all of your SSC batch mates is good, all will get absorbed. If you are left with only option of joining Short Service Commission, go ahead and keep working like if you are permanent commission officer, you would be absorbed in to permanent commission.

  6. Hello sir. My name is shravya, I will be doing B.tech in cse branch. So, after 4 years can I go for a lady officer’s training. And my main doubt is that can I join Indian army after doing B.tech?

    1. Hi Shravya.
As, you have mentioned that you are pursuing B.tech and look forward to join Indian army then after completing your graduation you can join Indian army through CDS(Common Defense Services) exam. CDS is a written exam conducted twice every year by UPSC. It is meant to select officers for Army, Navy and Air Force. Men and women both can apply for CDS and the best part is about CDSE is that there is no percentage bar for it. While men can apply for Army (IMA and OTA) Navy (INA) and Air Force (AFA), women can only apply for Army (OTA) i,e officer training academy. At present just focus on your graduation and afterwards you can prepare for this exam.

  7. Sir
I am going to complete my B.tech in electronics and communication engineering 2018 but my batch was 2017 and for what post I can apply? 12th percentage 70% and 10th 90% and B.tech 67% till 6th semester. I have good communication skills as well. Please suggest me sir
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Falit.
As, you have mentioned that you are going to complete your B.tec then join Indian army through UES exam(university Entry Scheme). The age limit for this exam is 18 to 24 years. The education qualification required is that you must be studying in the Pre-Final year or must have completed the Engineering Course in recognized Universities/Institution/Colleges but must possess the education qualification at the time of joining training. You can also apply for TGC(Technical Graduate Course) which is also similar to UES exam and only B.tec dgree holders can apply for this. the age limit for this is 20-27 years. Other than this once you have completed your graduation you can also apply for CDS exam through which you can become an officer in Indian army.

  44. Sir, I have passed class 10(CBSE) with 8.6 CGPA, approx 82% and I aspire to join Indian Army. Is there any exam by which I can join the Indian Army infantry level, and is promotion expectable henceforth ? I am currently facing many difficulties in continuing my studies, but I read in many placed that without +2 there is no place in IA. Sir, is there any way to join the infantry directly with any exam after 10?

    1. akash kumar goswami

Hi sir. My name is Akash and I have completed my 10th and now I m facing some problem to continue further studies so, can I expect to join in Indian army. And will there be any promotion henceforth. Please help me out I want to join Indian army as soon as possible. Sir clear my doubts so that I can take less stress. I am just 20yr old I’m worried about my future.

    2. Hi Akash.
As, you have mentioned that you have completed your 10th class then you can join Indian army at soldier GD post only. Other post like clerk, soldier technical requires higher qualification. We would recommend you to first complete your studies so, that you can apply for higher post. Since you are 20 years old you have only one chance to apply for soldier GD post as the age limit for this post is 17 and half to 21 years. If you get selected for soldier GD post you will get promoted from sepoy/refileman to naik and then to higher post.
