How you should prepare for the board exams

Exams are not what you think they are

Exams are nothing but a way to test if you have got mature enough to attain more knowledge or not. If you pass the exam that means that you are now ready at a mental level to take more knowledge. And if unfortunately, you fail that does not mean that you are a loser or Something.

Exams are migraines for you

If you fail then, it just means that you haven’t got to that mental state yet where you can relate the knowledge you gained too which you are going to inherit. Take it this way, if you are not prepared to lift a 2kg weight then you are simply not good enough to go for 3 kg’s (and please spare me, I am not a gym freak).

So, first of all, take the exams as your chance to prove yourself worthy instead of a big headache that comes every year. If you really think of exams like headaches, then board exams surely are migraines for you, but if you proceed with this approach then a day will come when exams will give you a brain tumor.

Sorry if I am offending you, but that’s the truth. But one change in approach can change it all.

Anyway, for more effective and efficient preparation you need to follow a strategy to score more than 90%.

Tackling board exams the right way

Like I said your approach can change everything, therefore it is very important for you to bring that change in yourself if you want to get good marks in your board exams.

Don’t be afraid just tackle the board exams the right way and you will surely win. Below are some tips that may help you.

Quality Vs Quantity

First of all, you need to make some fixed studying hours for yourself. I am not saying that you spend 8 or 12 hours studying, everyone knows even 2 hours of studying can produce great results.

But you need to make sure that whatever time you give to your studies, you only give it to your studies and to nothing else. Always remember quality always wins over quantity.

You can spend hours in front of your books wondering what your friends must be doing, and, on the contrary, you can give only 20 minutes reading, and then go with your friends.

Time Schedule – a necessity

Make a timetable, this may sound a bit old-fashioned and not so cool! but trust me if you make one and strictly follow it, then you will thank me and yourself later.

So try to make a proper time table and follow it as much as you can. It will be very difficult initially, but with determination, you can do it.

While making a timetable make sure you choose the studying hours very carefully, try to study at the time when there is no one around to bother you like dawn times.

Theory of relativity

one thing that you should keep in mind while studying is that, while you are preparing a question, don’t just try to solve that question but try to relate with other problems too.

For example, if you are solving a physics derivation of coulomb’s law then try to think of other derivation that uses the product of this derivation, and this is what physics does all the time. One derivation is somehow related to others.

So try to relate things while studying, this is the best way to study physics.

One Question in different ways

While practicing the class 12th Physics previous year question papers, make sure that you note the common questions that come every year and the way they are asked.

A question can be asked in many ways, and if you fail to understand the question then you can never answer it right. Hence you should have the right instincts to understand the question first.

Make your own definitions

Since physics has lots of formulas and equations, therefore it becomes hard for students to remember them. But the finest way of remembering the physics formula is understanding them not by their definitions but with the constant and variables in the formula.

For example, if a formula is like this:  x ∝ y/z. this equation can be read as when x increases then the result of y divided by z also increases, and this also means that when x will increase z will decrease and vice versa, etc.

I know this is a bit confusing but what I am trying to say is that you should try to make your own definition from the formula instead of mugging the one written in your book or notebook.

Don’t be greedy if running out of time

Finally, if you think it will be impossible to cover the whole syllabus, or you are too late to cover the entire syllabus then do not try to lay your hands on every chapter, instead, pick the easiest chapters and prepare them as well as you can.

Trying to mug up all the important questions from every chapter will surely not produce any good results, but going with only those chapters that you have well-practiced and which are easy will reduce the damage quite significantly.

So if you are too late to cover the whole syllabus then just prepare those topics that you already have practiced at least once and the topics that are easy.

In the end, it’s the knowledge that matters and not the marks. Hope this article was beneficial for you.

  5. Hello Sir I revised my whole syllabus of physics . Now i am solving previous year question papers . They are almost done .Sir I don’t know what to do after this because i hv deadline of revising physics till 28 feb. Please tell me Sir

    1. Hello Rachan,
More is less in case of board exams, there is always something to practice. If you are done with previous year papers and revising, then try solving sample papers and other mock test. Since you have time, therefore do try to take a mock test, take a sample paper and sit in a quite room where no one will disturb you. Now treat the sample as if it is your real board exam, and try to solve the papers within 3 hours. This is the best way to prepare yourself for board.

  14. I am very weak in physics. I don’t know how to score good marks to score more than 80%.
Can You suggest me, how to improve?

    1. Hello Ayush,
80% marks in physics is a difficult target and you have to completely dedicate yourself to studies to achieve this goal. For physics, make a list of important topics that you have to cover to get good marks, then look for different sources of learning those topics like videos etc. practice as much questions as you can from those topics. For this plan to work you need to make a proper time table.

  15. Hiii Sir!! I am kiran, I am afraid of failure of physics exam in which it is very difficult to get 23 marks. Can you suggest me, what should I have to do??
I shall be very thankful to you!

    1. Hello Kiran,
First of all get the fair of failure out of your mind, tell yourself you will pass with good marks. Next, when sit to study don’t think of just passing, think that you have to score good marks. When you will aim big, then only you will get big.

make a list of topics that are easy to cover, and which you can understand easily, then begin preparing them one by one. Do not try to cram, it will not help, first you need to understand the topics, if definitions are not helping then watch videos on it internet is filled with physics interactive videos.

At the end of a topic make sure to practice all kind of questions and if possible then take a short test on it. For this thing to work you will need to give lots of time to your studies.

So, go ahead and dedicate yourself to studies for couple of month and you will not only pass in physics but will score good marks in it. All the best!

  16. Sir I m a class 12 student .I spend my 10000 rupees on learning physics but that teacher is not attending the classes. Now 2018 has arrived n my about more that 80 %syllabus is left . What to do

    1. Hello Apoorva,
The board result will be yours and not your teacher’s, so do not depend on anyone. Since there is hardly 1 and a half month remaining therefore covering the whole syllabus will not do any good. Instead you should just make list of some units that can be covered and practiced well withing this time span and should try to perfect those units.

  17. Hii sir,i am a class xii student of pcm, boards are very near but i have’nt completed my syllabus of any subject excluding eng and physical..
and now i feel very dissapointed because it is nearly impossible to cover the whole syllabus .so what should i do ithseese remaining days to score alteast 80% of marks?

    1. Prof. Rajeev Mehra

      Hello Umesh,
Now is not the time to get disappointed, clear your mind first. Do not try to cover units that will consume time, and that you think are not possible to cover. Make sure to revise each and every topic that you have already covered, and practice it as much as possible.

My advise is to first revise the chapters that you have already cover and then try to cover the remaining ones.

    1. Hello Jojo,
Of course the previous year papers can prove to be very helpful in scoring good marks in board exams. If you really practice them well, then yo can score very good marks. Even, most of the toppers of CBSE suggest practicing from previous year papers. But, don’t totally be dependent on them, they are beneficial if you have completed your syllabus.

  21. sammed imagoudanavar

Hi sir I am Sammed Imagoudanavar and I am 12th class student of pcmb. I cannot concentrate on my study my mind always get divert. What can I do for that give me suggestion.

    1. Hi Sameed.
It is a very common problem among students. Concentrating while studying can be hard, especially when the study material isn’t one of your favorite topics. Now a days there are endless things that distracts students while studying. First thing that you need to do is keep yourself away from mobile phone, tv etc when you are studying. Second thing is arrange a schedule for study time, and keep with it. Start with setting small target for yourself like if you study for 2 hours straight then you can take 5-10 min extra for break. Always challenge yourself. Study subjects like Chemistry and Biology in the morning when you mind is fresh and relaxed. Whenever you start studying start with the subject that you find interesting and then move to others. Finding an effective study method that suits you can help you stay concentrated while studying. Again, every person studies differently, so you will have to experiment and find a method that works best for you to maintain focus. So, there are number of things you can do but first keep yourself relaxed.

  22. Hi sir. I’m aryan mishra and I’m a 12th class student of PCM group. I cannot concentrate on my study even though I also made the time table but I don’t follow that properly. My mind gets diverted easily. So, what can I do for that.

    1. Hi Aryan.
The most important thing that you need to understand is that if you are not focused while studying then you will never score good marks because in the examination hall you will just forget everything. So, if you really want to score good marks in board exam then you will have to be dedicated towards your studies. While studying keep yourself away from any kind of distraction like mobile phone, tv etc. To build up your interest while studying start with the subject that you find easy and interesting. Set yourself a time table in which you give 1-2 hour to study and then 10 min of break. But make sure when you are studying you are focused. At first it will be difficult to follow the time table but you have to be persistent and no matter what don’t give up. Eventually you will find yourself doing better. Whenever you find yourself distracted remind yourself of your aim.
