National Defence Academy has always been considered as one of the reputed institutions. Lakhs of students apply for the NDA written exam. The test standards for this exam are so high that very few make it through the written exam. Tests in SSB are much intense than written and get’s at the peak in Interview.

Only 350 cadets make it to the NDA every six months. The rest being merit-out, non-qualified from SSB, or non-recommended candidates. And, this is the only reason that the National Defence Academy releases the only cream after 4 years of training.

NDA Merit List 2023

Well! NDA final merit list is generated by UPSC incorporate the marks of written test as well as the SSB. One needs to have a decent score in the written exam as well as in SSB in order to make it up to the merit list. After NDA written exam, the list of candidates who have cleared it is declared in about 3 months.

The aspirant who are confident that they will definitely clear the written exam, get enough time to prepare for the SSB. This time period is in fact for the preparation of the SSB interview, and one must utilize it efficiently.

NDA Cut Off Marks

You must be well aware of the fact that as per the policy of UPSC.gov.in, you should have at least 30% in each subject. The NDA cut off marks are different every time. Nowadays, they are usually around 350, but your aim should be to score around 450 as it will ensure you a place in the NDA final merit list which ranks you on basis of your score in written and SSB. i.e out of 900 in written and out of 900 in SSB.

As per the stats, the cutoff usually goes around 350, however, it can vary from year to year. For the past 2 years, the cutoff has been less than 310. So, there are no guarantees.  There are also some possibilities that the cut-off of NDA written exam in Maths may go to 25%, as the exam of this subject may be though in the forthcoming years.

All in all, you have to get at least 350 in written and that’s it. The following table has the record of the NDA cutoff list for the last 5 years.

Year Cutoff for NDA I Cutoff for NDA II
2012 333 322
2013 337 313
2014 348 368
2015 306 269
2016 288 229
2018 338 325
2019 342 346
2020 350
2021 345-355(Expected) 349-359(Expected)

NDA is a job-oriented competitive exam, so there are no minimum marks criteria to pass the exam. But, as per the last 10 years’ analyses, one must carry at least 35% in each paper. And if we talk about an individual paper cut off marks, then in Maths, one is expected to score 130+ and in General Ability Test, the score must be between 280-300(approx.). However, you need 20% in each paper to clear the sectional cut-off. But, the overall cut off is around 35-40%. 40% of marks are considered as a good score.

NDA Result declare Date

Aspirants endeavoring with a dream of becoming an armed force officer must keep some important dates in mind. The NDA I written exam is generally conducted in the month of April and the result for this exam releases in the month of June. Likewise, the NDA II written exam is conducted in the month of September and the result is expected to be declared in the month of November.

What After The NDA Result And NDA Merit List

Aspirants are often confused about the process after the written exam result. Let’s put some light on this topic.

You get the result after 2-3 months. An e-mail is sent to your registered mail ID which is your SSB interview call letter. Take a printout of that, it is acceptable as a call letter. First-timers get TA (travel allowances) of AC – 3 tire for both sides.

After clearing 5 days of SSB, one has to go through the medical test, and then comes the final merit list (which is prepared after adding marks of written and SSB tests). It’s recommended for students to score more in the written exam as it is comparatively easier than SSB.

Finally, if you are recommended then you have to stay for a medical check-up, and well-fit aspirants will be recommended for the National Defence Academy. Just keep in mind that very few get the final selection. But, at this moment, you don’t need to get disheartened, instead start focusing on your next attempt from that very moment.

The time period between the date of declaration of written result and SSB date may vary from 2-5 weeks. The aspirants who are not comfortable with the allotted date can contact UPSC to change the date.

FAQs About NDA/NA Exams Result

Q: Why UPSC announces its result so late?

UPSC does not only conduct NDA exams, there are many exams conducted under the Union Public Service Commission. Because of the sheer volume of the papers, the result of UPSC exams takes more time.

QHow difficult is it exactly to qualify for the National Defence Academy?

Yes, it is difficult but not impossible. The selection ratio is 3 in every 4000 or 1 in every 1333 person. So you got to be the best of best. There are so many steps to be covered to reach your final destination. Starting with the written test, followed by SSB, interview, and then the medical test, make it quite difficult to get finally recommended.

Q: How many marks in the NDA Examination is enough for a sure shot selection in the academy?

There is not any particular range of marks to qualify for the NDA examination. The written exam as well as SSB is there to rate your mental standard and will not judge you according to the marks of your written exam.
However, if a candidate has 60% marks in both Mathematics and General Ability test in the written exam then his selection for SSB is almost certain.

Q: Are the marks of the NDA written exam added to the final merit list?

Yes, the final merit list is totally based on the marks of the written exam which is out of 900, and the marks of SSB which is out of 900. The sum total is 1800 and the final merit list will be out of 1800.

Q: How do I check NDA marks?

Actually, you cannot check NDA marks. UPSC only releases the list of candidates who are eligible for SSB interviews, not the marks or ranks. The aspirants who are shortlisted for the interview get a call letter from the SSB center on their e-mail regarding all the details of SSB. Even after SSB, candidates have not informed anything regarding their marks, they just say whether you are recommended or not. If you are you proceed for medical examination.

    1. Hello Shubham,

It’s good for you that you are preparing for nda from class 11th, as the syllabus of NDA includes mostly topics from CBSE class 11th and 12th.

Keep your basic concept clear right from class 11th.
If you attend coaching classes, then try to give at least 2 hours a day to self study. If you don’t take any coaching classes, and have more free time, then give at least 3 to 4 hour to self study.

Practice from NDA previous year papers, it will give you an idea on how difficult are the questions asked in NDA as compared to school exams.

Don’t worry, it is not as difficult as you think. Just relax and give your 100%. See our article “7 Effective Steps To Crack NDA Written Exam in 1st Attempt” for more tips.

  56. Sir I have already given the exam of NDA 1 this year and till now I did not get any information regarding the result and cut off marks. And I already check almost all the websites of UPSC which was mention in the net when I browse for some 2 or 3 month. Although result has been declared previous month but please kindly share some website to check the result. To get selected in NDA was only my dream since 9th standard but due to the lack of websites I did not get any information till now. Now I am already late for getting admission in college but next year also I am going to apply for the same exam, therefore sir I request you to kindly suggest me some solution of what I have stated above.

    1. Hi Imchaden.
As, you have mentioned in your comment that you were unable to check your NDA I result so, I would tell you that the result was first and foremost uploaded in the official website of UPSC which is upsc.gov.in and from the above post also you can check the NDA result as we have provided the link above. Earlier you might have faced server problem due to which you were unable to check your result. And in case you would have qualified the written exam then you would have received your call letter for SSB no matter what. Now the only option you have is to prepare for next year. Don’t loose hope as you have another chance. Just focus on that and keep on working hard.

  57. Hello. Myself Dalip Singh. There is one month remaining in NDA exam. How can I prepare myself for this and how can I revise all subjects in this month. Please reply.

    1. Hi Dalip.
Now that you have only one month left for the preparation it is time to devote all your time to your studies. Keep yourself focused and study regularly. Each and every single day counts. By now you must have completed your syllabus and all you are left with is revision so, first practice from previous year papers and give online test also. After practicing from these you will get the idea of important questions. Pick all the important topics of one subject and revise them. Be dedicated towards your studies. Analyze your weak and strong areas and work accordingly. For more details just search for ‘7 Effective Steps To Crack NDA Written Exam in Ist Attempt’ in the search box of our website.

  58. Hi. How I do preparation for nda for 2018? which books will be best for the exam.

    1. Hi Manish.
If you are preparing for NDA exam then the most important thing is being focused toward your studies and dedicated towards your aim. First set yourself timetable and follow it strictly. Make sure that you are fully aware with the syllabus and the exam pattern so that you can prepare according to that. Regular study is mandatory. Each and every day counts. NCERT book is most recommend as most of the exam paper comes from them only. So, first complete your syllabus from NCERT and then practice from previous year paper and sample paper. Along with it also give online test. You will have to work really hard if you really want to crack the NDA exam. For more information on NDA written exam just search for ‘7 Effective Steps To Crack NDA Written Exam in Ist Attempt’ in the search box of our website.

  59. Hello sir. Mera nam Naman hai. Mai 11th class main pdh rha hoon. Sir 12th main kitni percentage chaiye NDA clear krne ke liye.

    1. Hi Naman.
There is no specific percentage that is required in 12th class to be eligible for NDA exam.
