The first day of SSB begins with the Screening test which include Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test in which you are given approximately 54-55 questions. This section covers the topics like simple linguistic, logical, analytical, and mathematical questions in writing. This is then followed by another test commonly known as Picture Perception Description Test in which a blur picture is shown to the candidate and he has to collect his thoughts to form a story, narrate it and then discuss it with his  group members to create a common story.

Detailed Schedules Of NDA 5 Days SSB

Days Test Details

Day 2 Officer Intelligence Rating Test, Thematic Perception Test, Picture Perception Description Test, Word Association Test
Day 3 Group Discussion, Group Planning, Progressive group task

These two tests on Day 1 are the real challenge as this round decides the fate of the candidate that which candidate is going to stay, and who will be sent back home. The qualifying candidates are one of those lucky aspirants who stays in the centre for rest of the 4 days and required to fill the personal information questionnaire.

The Day 2 of SSB is more challenging. It is about testing your Psychology in many different ways. This includes a Thematic Perception Test, which you are going to find quite similar to Picture Perception Description Test, only this time the picture is clear instead of blur.

Word Association Test examine the sharpness of mind and quick thinking ability. In this, a word is shown and one need to write the first thought that pops up in mind related to the given word within 15 seconds. 60 such words are given to the candidate.

The Day 3 and 4 of SSB are the days which consist some difficult tasks for the candidates, and mostly it is to test their group performance and team spirit. Tests like group discussion, group planning, progressive group tasks, individual obstacles, group obstacles race etc. are conducted. All the tasks on these days has to be performed in a group and accomplish them with support of each other.

Day 5 of SSB is the final day on which a candidate has to appear in a conference where all the board examiners, psychologists, GTO’s and technical officer are present. He has to answer some common questions for half an hour, and finally, the result of SSB is then declared. All those who makes it through have to stay for the medical examination.

SSB for sure is a tough fight, and this fight can not be won just by dreaming to win it. One must embrace the uphill battle and accordingly put efforts.

Strategies To Tackle SSB

Most of the experience holders suggest that SSB is all about being yourself and displaying your personality as it is in real life. But knowing only this much is not enough. To crack SSB one need to have professional approach. And the following article is to guide you how to opt one.

# Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test

The test comprises of two test booklets, each booklet has around 40 questions for which you are given 17 minutes. It comprises of two sections: verbal and non-verbal. From verbal section, the questions are related from topics like relationship, jumbled words, coding/decoding, multiple choice question,  antonym and synonym, reconstruction of sentence, one word substitution, odd one out, common sense, alphabet test and Arithmetic questions.

And non-verbal section comprises of questions based on topics like, which figure is different from the other, completion of series, locate the concealed figure and fill in the correct figure. On the positive side, there will be no negative marking in this particular test.

Prepare Yourself

Shortcut is not an option when you are preparing for Officer Intelligence Rating test, you have to practice wholeheartedly. This test can easily be mastered by daily practice. So, the best way is to pick every topic one by one and solve at least ten questions from each. Apart from this, aspirants need to analyze different verbal and non-verbal questions. Don’t just practice, instead you need to understand the basic logic behind it. Your logical ability and intelligence is what actually it requires.

Accuracy and speed both plays a major role in OIR test. Therefore, aspirants need to take care of both. Instead of rushing, focus on answering correctly in a minimum possible time. Number of attempts won’t fetch you anything, only number of correct attempts will matter.

Strategy

I would like to suggest aspirants to attempt only those questions for which you are absolutely sure. This test is to check your intelligence and other aptitudes. Thus, designed holistically to counter balance such guesses and luck games. From my personal experience, the quantity of the questions attempted does not matter in Officer Intelligence Rating Test.

Example

Verbal Section

Q: If in a certain language, DELHI is coded as EFMIJ, how is BOMBAY coded in that code ?
A: Understand the code. Each alphabet of DELHI is coded by its succeeding alphabet. Likewise, code Bombay as CPNCBZ.

Non-verbal Section

Q: Complete the given series : 1, 3, 5, 7______
A: There is a difference of (2) between each number. So, the next number will be 9.

# Picture Perception Description Test

Picture Perception Description Test is a psychological test to check the thought process of the candidates. An image is presented with a character, and you are expected to project a story on that picture. There will be a hazy picture and generally, the main character will be shown struggling in some despair. Candidate need to write the story with a positive message having practical solution.

The story writing is followed by Group discussion where you have to present your story to the group and discuss each other’s stories. In the end, the group should be ready with a common story.

Prepare Yourself

Picture Perception Description Test is all about observing things very keenly. One cannot fully prepare themselves for this unless you have a habit of observing every little detail. Starting from today keep your mind alert all the time and observe people and your surrounding. With this, a positive approach towards things will always count as a plus point to write the description. So, in every aspect of life try to keep a positive mindset. This will eventually have a good effect on your writing skills and will help you in PPDT.

Group discussion will also be there. For that, i would suggest you to use your communication skills, discuss thoroughly the content of your story. With that, carefully listen to other candidates stories too.

Mostly, aspirants try to complicate the story line, instead you need to stick on to the basic story. Don’t get distracted. PPDT is to check your mental health, so try to write a positive story. Most candidate overlook the time limit, ignore the instructions and thus, end up ruining their chances of clearing the PPDT. The level of your mind’s positivity, fertility and optimism will be reflected through this test.

For group discussion, one more advice for the aspirants is to play a constructive role in the discussion. Don’t start arguing mindlessly and never ever raise your voice. You are not there to become the limelight, just stay calm and the ball will surely be in your court.

Strategy

There are possibilities that you will get a blur image. So, a candidate should figure out some central feature as quick as possible.  At the same time, clear picture can prove to be a big advantage as you are free to perceive anything relating to the basic plot and there will be no need to figure out the exact story behind the picture. Candidates can make story out from the background and the environment.

In group discussion, you have to present your story, but while discussing, you also have to keep a fact in your mind that ultimately, the group should be ready with a common story. Usually, the person who speaks considering the interests of the group gets recommended for the next level.

Don’t just keep on speaking instead listen to the speakers attentively. And, when speaking, don’t look at the assessors while narrating the story or during the discussion.

Example

picture perception description test

A: Rajat is returning from school when he saw a gear up car moving on a road got collided with rickshaw cart coming from front. The car instead of stopping tried to escape from the accident area, Rajat immediately note down the car number, calls for ambulance and give the number to nearby police station. The information proves to be very helpful to get hold of the culprit. Sanjay get award and praise for his work.

# Thematic Apperception Test

Thematic Apperception Test is a projective psychological test and much like Picture Perception Description Test. 11 pictures and 1 blank slide is displayed on the screen. Candidates are asked to write a story on each picture in 3-4 minutes which appear on the screen for only 30 seconds. It is designed to test the deep thoughts and imagination of a candidate.

Writing 11 stories back to back on different pictures are more than enough to reveal your personality. While the candidates are still busy in constructing their thoughts and writing them down, after few minutes a blank slide is presented to them and they have to write a story with there own vision. These 12 stories will form an exact impact of your personality on the mind of psychologist.

Prepare Yourself

Thematic Perception Test in SSB is to evaluate your patterns of thoughts, hidden emotions and actions. Now, to bring changes in your thinking process will obviously take some time, it is not a work for a month or two. It’s a long term process, and for good results you need to start now.

For this, try building some customs which can make your psych close to what is required in armed forces. What will help you in extreme way is reading, because it will greatly improve your way of shaping your thoughts.

While writing your story, always try to aim for a realistic point of view, practical problems and their solutions. Do not give impractical opinion or use childish imaginations. At the same time, your story should have some motto. Baseless stories without maturity is not to be entertained in the SSB. Always make sure that you must not loose your originality while writing stories.

Strategy

While writing stories on different pictures, you should keep a hero. This hero is very important because it not only represents you, but the whole positiveness that resides in you. At the same time, you need to focus on the productive outcome of stories in which the hero should be playing a positive character.

The difficulties rises in cases where the pictures will depict negativity like a gloomy face, a dead body, an accident scene, or something like that. Don’t overlook them, create a story out of them and end on a positive note. Thematic Apperception Test is your chance to show officer like qualities.

Example

 Thematic Apperception Test

Thematic Apperception Test

Details:
As per the picture, i have seen a male character sitting on a boat and age around 14+ years (mentioned in the box). I have also seen two persons but unable to guess their gender. But, it seems that the age of the person sitting in the middle is around 45 years. Because, he is rowing the boat(just an assumption) and person sitting beside is 11+

Story:
It is a beautiful afternoon. Deepak is taking a boat ride down the stream with his father and younger brother.
‘So, what are you going to be when you grow up?’ asked the father.
‘I am like this boat. It will go wherever the stream goes,’ said Deepak.
After a while, the boat reached the sea. Father rowed along the beach and stopped the boat. They got out of the boat and rested on the beach. When it was almost sunset, they walked to their houses which were very near the beach.
Sometimes you need to determine which path of life you want to take. Yes, the deciding line will appear everyday in you life. Be careful.

# Word Association Test

As discussed above, Word Association test is once again a psychological test where you are given 60 words back to back each for 15 seconds and you have to make a sentence for each. Don’t mistake it as a sentence making test. In fact, WAT is all about testing your intelligence and that how you response to a word instantly.

Here is your fair chance to flaunt your mindset. Mostly there are verbs, to test your actions in different situations. You will get a little time of 15 seconds. So, forget that your preparation with few words will work. Not at all. Instead, it will be better to stay original.

Prepare Yourself

For the preparation of WAT, you need to enhance the ability of extensive vocabulary. Just don’t go with few words given on the internet or books. Instead, try to develop your mind in such a way that there will be no need of thinking. You cannot mug up and put it down when required rather it is judging your thought process which you have build up over the years.

Things will fall into place if you practice more and more. The more you practice unintentionally, the more you will get open-minded for the test.

Remember this is SSB we are talking about, so it’s never going to be easy. They always keep a high standards of expectation from the candidates, and are going to test you in different manner. For instance they might give you a negative word, but there you have to use your intelligence and form a sentence with a positive image. Don’t rush into things, keep your mind focused and write meaningful and qualitative sentences. Your success in WAT not only depend on how well you form sentences but your writing speed too. So, work on this if you want to perform well.

Strategy

The time duration for this test is really challenging, because you have to set your mind within few minutes and write your response. The good news is, you can leave the space blank if you find yourself stuck and come back to it later. But this doesn’t mean you will be given extra time for it, you will have to mange time in between. Write simple and brief sentences reflecting your self confidence and other officer like qualities.

Example

Q: Accept
A: Strong people accept challenge willingly.

Some other words: approach, again, child, delay, aware, adult, calm, careful, calamity, death, etc.

# Group Task

GTO is a series of nine tasks in total which are conducted on third and fourth day of SSB by Ground Testing Officer. These nine tasks are not particularly evaluated, instead GTO evaluate candidates on the basis of whole by putting them through different activities. You have to perform every task in a group of 8-10 aspirants.

GD (group discussion): It all starts with two group discussions for 20 min each where they are going to give you two social issues to discuss. When the discussion starts there are chances that it will soon turn into an argument and even a verbal fight. At that moment, you should have a particular strategy that you neither have to indulge into debate nor you can remain silent, just follow the middle path to remain quiet and say whenever it is required. Don’t try to start the discussion if you are not 100% sure about it, instead speak valid points at vital moments which will make a note before GTO that you are not lagging behind the group.

Group planning exercise: This is then  followed by group planning exercise in which a situation will be given on a board and group has to give a common plan to solve the situation as well as individual solutions on a paper. You have to analyse the problem logically with the provided resources. After that, the group has to choose a representative among them who will present the plan.

Group obstacle race: Afterwards, there is a group obstacle race, also known as snake race in which aspirants have to run holding a snake. Not actually a snake but a long sac like structure which a group has to hold altogether. Then you have to run with it and have to cross certain obstacles. Here, your ability to work in a group is checked by GTO.

Progressive group task: After this, you  have to take part in progressive group task where again you need to perform in group and will have to pass an obstacle with the help of materials like, plank, rope, etc. Here 4 set of tasks are given to the group and with the help of two planks and a rope, you have to carry all group members and a load from the start line to the finish line. Other major rules to follow in PGT are demonstrated by Group Task Officer.

Half group task: Further, there is a half group task, which is quite similar to PGT, but this time the group are divided in two parts. Each group is going to work separately to cross one obstacle with the help of 2 planks and a rope by following the directions given by GTO. You have to complete the obstacle in the given time along with your group members.

Lecturette: Group task also have a lecturette where you are given 4 topics out of which you have to choose one. The time duration given to you for preparing your speech will be only 3 minutes and another 3 min are provided to speak on the chosen topic.

Command task: Command task plays a major role in the NDA SSB. Firstly, GTO takes a brief introduction of your education and hobbies and then assign a task. Then, you are required to lead two subordinates from your group to cover a short obstacle by instructing them a solution yourself. You have to reach the finish line with your subordinates. Your leadership quality, sportsmanship and team spirit in this task will give a major influence of your personality in front of GTO.

Individual obstacle race: In this a candidate has to cover ten obstacles back to back within a time period of 3 minutes. You have to run through a set of obstacles according to the numbers which will be assigned to you.

At last, they are going to give you a Final Group Task which is almost similar to PGT. This time you have to work on a complex obstacle. Once you get a simple idea of your problem, it will become easier for you to clear this task.

Prepare Yourself

People often neglect to practice for group tasks.  GTO requires a lot of preparation and hard work right from the beginning. So, buckle up right now, brush your GK, form your own unbiased opinions which should be original, radical, progressive and most of all, solution oriented.

For outdoor tasks, start taking part in games and sports and act at your best in everything. Most importantly, back in your mind keep this as a reminder that you are not working as individual rather as a group. If every candidate will focus on their own performance they will never make it as successful group.

While performing tasks in GTO, you always have to remember that neither you have to show your superiority over other group members, nor you should act tamed, make a balance between both. GTO is mostly about group tasks, so try to indulge in the group more and more. Try to enjoy the tasks instead of performing them monotonously. SSB will give you all sort of scope to display your talent.

Strategy

The main aim of the GTO is to grill you on various fronts. He will check your confidence, mental stability, reasoning, application of concepts, and team spirit. You just have to keep one thing in mind that whatever be the situation, you should not leave your team at any cost. You should always take the team along with you and always try to emerge as a leader but at the same time, don’t try to force yourself as one.

Your result totally depends on your ability, how calm is your mind in stressful conditions, how well you cope up with different situations, and how efficiently you blend with your team to take them out of struggling situations. Always remember, even your small activity counts.

# Conference

Conference day is also the day when final result is declared. You have to report in formals for the final conference, and there you are going to meet the president of your board. He is generally going to ask you some normal question, most probably, about your experience in SSB. Keep yourself calm, focused and true, and answer them with confidence.

Prepare Yourself

For the conference there is nothing much to prepare other than sticking to your original personality. Keep your mind full of positiveness. This will also help you to relax. Believe in yourself, your positive vibes will surely make everything easier and sorted and will aid you to take a step forward towards your dream of qualifying SSB.

Conference is a part of your final selection so, don’t take it as a battle to win. The more you will be yourself the more it will help you. If you need to improve something than work on how you present yourself to others. Because your first impression is the last impression. While answering don’t exaggerate things, keep to the point. They have your records so don’t try to over smart them. And above all remember you have given your best.

Strategy

Boost yourself by reminding that they are already impressed by you, and thus, you are here in the conference. This is the final milestone. Take it easy and make it your best. There are 90% chances that they will ask your experience in SSB.

Always answer positively. Tell them that you have spent the best time of your life in the campus. Give them the impression of how much you have learned and improved yourself, and that you surely are taking a lot back with you. SSB conference is a crucial step in the whole process that finalizes your selection, so keep a smiling face and answer calmly.

Crack SSB In 6 Steps

You have realized your dream of qualifying SSB at a stroke. Now what you need to ask yourself is, how are you going to prepare yourself to convert this dream into reality? by now you must have realized that by going through every possible book or concentrating on your physical fitness is not enough. And unfortunately this is what every one is doing. You need to work on something that will set you apart from others. SSB is more of being your own self instead of imitating someone.

But when you see an officer, there are always some qualities that will leave a mark on you. You must have these traits and habits in you to become an armed officer. These habits are not something that people are born with, but rather they are developed with time. Undermentioned are some of the qualities which can be developed by following good habits.

# Behave like an officer

behave like an officerThe moment you decide you want to become an officer, start behaving like one. You must have met an officer before, then surely his confidence and way of presenting himself must have left an impression on you. If you haven’t met any officer yet, then I suggest you do meet one. They have a unique aura which motivates other to be like them.

To acquire officer like qualities you have to change your basic nature. Focus on that core of yourself which needs to be changed to become an officer. Try to bring positive changes in yourself from the very inside and make it the way of life.

Can you remember the last time, you observed yourself? Have you ever tried to notice every little detail of yourself? if not, then do it as soon as possible. Make a habit of observing yourself and start working on your negative points. The more you pinpoint your flaws and try to work on them, the less difficulties you will face in the SSB. Officers do the same.

In SSB you have to spend 5 days with boys whom you have never met before. These 5 days will test your social behavior and communication skills at extreme standards. You have to adjust with them, make compromises day in day out, and sometimes things may not work the same way you want them.

Each day will push even harder, but you have to be strong.  The best way to deal with such situations is to become ‘water’. You put it in a container and it takes the shape of the container. Apply this theory on yourself, be like it and things will become far easier than ever before.

Start working on your confidence. When an officer talks, his confidence is reflected not only in his words but in his body too. Everything is just mesmerising and filled with whole lot of confidence. This is the best officer like quality which you should start developing to crack SSB.

An officer always handle different affairs by being completely focused. Presence of mind is what counts every single moment when you are at your workplace. So, why not build up the same habit from the very moment? Sometimes, people lack presence of mind while juggling various tasks. To become an officer, you need to get over this.

Live like an officer in your day to day life, and you will not need to act like one in SSB. They will have no choice but to recommend you.

# Be Yourself

be yourselfAlways remember, SSB is not conducted to look for some exceptional and super humans. They are just in search of honest and passionate cadets. You have to be qualified, skilful and must have passion. Be yourself in the interview.

Be honest from the very moment while filling up PIQ form. Don’t be a swagger bragging about things you never did. This will haunt you during SSB interview. They will confuse you by asking the same questions which you have answered in PIQ in some different way. So, don’t even think to act smart. Proudly, be yourself.

Honesty is the best policy, yet can easily become the worst practice. It’s  good to be honest, but being too upfront is not at all advisable. You should be honest with the whole procedure, but at the same time maintain the gap of interviewer and candidate. Don’t try to become over friendly, just a basic level of abstraction will help. So, try to speak only as much as required.

# Two Mantras: Interact and Observe

interact and observeStart observing people, things, situations and every little activity around you. Don’t rush into taking actions. Remember, first observe the situation then analyze, and then take action.

“To acquire knowledge, one must study, but to acquire wisdom, one must observe”

Socially interact with people and start observing them. Indulge in a social circle where you can gain something. Friendships are good, but only as long as they are turning you into a better person. Leave those friends thankfully who are just there to show you that who you don’t want to be. Once you start forming a friend circle with the same ambition, you will soon start shooting match with them.

Not just people, your social interaction must be outspread to every kind of current affair, social happening, etc. When you start observing things, do remember to keep your own views for them. The moment you start paying attention to every little detail and acknowledge them, then you will get a step ahead towards becoming an officer.

# Don’t Overcrowd Thoughts

overcrowded thoughtsThis is human nature to go from zero to fifty thoughts in just few seconds. What you need to do is increase your concentration power and focus on one thing at a time. Your head may be filled with thoughts, feelings, intentions, descriptions and many other things, but once you learn to keep everything aside and focus on what is needed to be done, things will get easier than ever.

This is what you have to do in SSB, keep your mind less crowded with thoughts, so that the brain could reproduce positive thoughts. Imagination power will help you a lot in different tasks and it is only possible when your mind is free from worldly problems. Your imagination will become a source of your creativity but only when you are free from the cuff of outside world.

There will be times when you have to keep your mind simple and less occupied, only then you will be able to listen the instructions carefully. Keep it simple, when your thoughts get too complexed, then you forget the obvious. Free mind knows how to think on feet. Quick and instant response is only possible when your mind is thinking clearly. Keep your brain organized and see the wonder.

# Physical Fitness

physical fitnessYou are opting a career where Physical fitness matters the most. You are nothing until your body keeps you in pace. So keep taking care of your health from Day. They do not expect a guy with perfect athletic built, but at least you should have a good stamina to cope up with different physical activities throughout the day.

If you really want to crack SSB, then there is an urgent need to hit the road early at 4 a.m. in the morning. When it comes to fitness you need to put your body beyond the limits sometimes. While working, keep in your mind that you are a defense aspirant and it is obvious that you have to maintain such a caliber to go with the flow. There are so many tasks that will test your efforts, like jumping over a slide, long jump, Zig-Zag Balance, High Screen jump, Burma bridge, Tarzan swing, Jumping platforms, Double Ditch, Commando walk, Tiger leap etc. But, keep reminding yourself it is almost impossible to beat a person who never gives up.

Another important factor is balanced diet. It is a fuel to your body and the calories you eat should be burned to power all the functions of the body. Eating a balanced diet will automatically help boosting your immune system, which is important for optimum physical fitness.

Most of all, one must know that physical fitness and mental fitness are interconnected. It is hard to separate a healthy body from a healthy mind. Keep your mind fresh and it will automatically lead to a healthy body.

# Meditation and hard work is the key to success

meditation and hardworkWe all know the best thing about meditation is that it keeps mind calm and concentrated which will surely help you not only in the interview but throughout the SSB. Once you learn to have control over your senses, your performance will eventually get better.

Meditation helps to overcome negative thoughts and makes you think out of the box. Through meditation you will also learn how to channelize your  positive thoughts into your surroundings. The whole idea of keeping a spiritual soul is to relax your wondering mind and meanwhile bring it to focus.

We know that whenever we are happy only then we are at true peace. The true meaning of meditation is keeping happy and positive thoughts. Being optimistic even in tough situation is what you will learn by practicing meditation in your daily routine.

Someone has rightly said that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who is not afraid, but he who conquers that fear. SSB is all about conquering your fear and to bring a better person out. But this is not where you have to stop, there are still miles to go. Clearing SSB is just a milestones, many such milestone are waiting thereafter. You have to keep up with this attitude and be ready to endure more pain in the training period.

Stay humble. Treat everyone in the campus like your friend, enjoy your stay there and give it your best shot! try to learn more and more during your stay there.

# Bonus Tip

You can help yourself with internet, books, interview question, practice and preparation, but what about the experience? You see experience is the best teacher, and for candidates who are up against experienced ones will have to face a tough fight. There are many who give their best shot but don’t get through for one or the other reason, but they gain experience. Meet them, have a talk and discuss about their experiences. As Chanakya once said:

Learn from the mistakes of others, you can’t live long enough to make them all yourselves“.
