National Defence Academy History and Training Details

The National Defence Academy is a premier defense academy for Indian Armed Forces where aspirants are trained to be included into tri-service such as the Army, Navy and Air-Force. The Academy has produced some renowned alumni who have served the country with pride and honor.

History of NDA

During the East African Campaign in World War II, a number of Indian soldiers sacrificed their lives in liberating Sudan. This led to the Sudanese Government’s contribution of £100,000 towards building a war memorial in the remembrance of the martyred Indian troops in 1941.

After the war came to an end, the then Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshall Claude Auchinleck of the Indian Army was inspired by the United States Military Academy and many other military academies model around the world and instituted a committee for establishing a Joint Services Military Academy in India.

Based on the recommendations of the said committee the Government India went on to establish its very own National Defence Academy in Pune, India on 16th of January 1955.

Wings of NDA

NDA is the institute that prepares cadets for Army, Navy and Air-force but upon accepted as a favorable cadet in the academy aspirants are divided into different Squadrons and Battalions.

There are around 18 squadrons in total as per the English alphabetical order starting from A-R. With the increase in the NDA aspirants every year the Defence Ministry of India is thinking about extending the squadrons based on the need.

Every year cadets from all these battalions and squadrons compete internally to leave a mark of their achievement as an encouragement for the future hopefuls.

Life inside NDA

For the next three years, this is one place which will turn into an abode for the cadets who are aspiring to serve the country. At first, the training regime will seem to be draining you both physically and mentally but with time as you realize that whatever you will learn here will be with you for the rest of your life, the journey will become easier.

The life inside NDA is definitely not a cake-walk but every bit of hard work that a cadet does is to make sure that the country gets the best protector that it deserves.

NDA Campus, Khadakwasla

The 7,015 acres of campus is located in the south-west part and is about 18 km from Pune. The Khadakwasla Lake is one reason that the site was chosen for the premiere academy, for one side has the lake shore and the other part is guarded by the hilly topography.

The campus interestingly is close to the Arabian Sea and has the Lohegaon Airbase in its close quarters. The Jodhpur Red Sandstone building has an administrative block named after Sudan.

The whole campus is adorned with the various remnants and memoirs from different wars and the contributions of the previous cadets who have won pride and protection for the country.

Training at NDA Pune

Here the training is more than what one studies in the academic colleges and university. One has to go through not only academic exams but other physical tests which spans six terms with five months dedicated to each term.

Once a cadet is done with the examinations and training, they will be awarded a degree of B.A or B.Sc from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and will move on to specialize in their respective wings.

Army cadets move on to train in Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Air-force cadets are trained in the Air-force academy, Hyderabad and the naval cadets march off to the training ships to fulfill the dream of serving the Nation.

There are people who might tell-a-tale of hardships in the Academy but no one succeeds without hard-work. Serving a country is a matter of pride that can only be earned with sheer determination, devotion, and discipline and that is what the NDA teaches you.
