Number of Seats in IIT Colleges, JEE Main and Advanced 2023

Indian Institute of Technology is a coveted cluster of engineering colleges where each and every Indian student pursuing science stream wants to enter. While studying in class XI and class XII, every Indian science stream student dream to cross the gateway of the IIT JEE entrance exam by any means. While crossing this gateway is a tough nut to crack, the procedure to follow their dream also is very time-consuming.

Number of Seats in IIT Colleges

Firstly, the students have to qualify IIT JEE Mains exam which is a sort of screening test to sieve only the cream quality science stream students by differentiating them from the average students who devoid the standard to fit into it. Finally, the qualified limited number of students have to sit for the IIT JEE Advanced exam, and when they qualify the same, their dream to join IIT for pursuing B.Tech in different engineering disciplines get fulfilled.

There is a list of qualifiers which the students have to pass through to fulfill the eligibility criteria for the IIT JEE Advanced exam. First of all, the qualifiers should be among the top 2, 24,000 rankers in the JEE Mains exam. Secondly, they should fulfill some formal criteria like they should be less than 25 years of age.

There is an exception though. The candidates who come under a reserved category like scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, and physically handicapped candidates, for them the age limit is 30 years. Thirdly, the qualifiers should not have taken the JEE Advanced exam two years before the particular year of admission or earlier. Finally, they should not have taken admission to any IIT earlier.

IIT Bombay

IIT Bombay is the most popular IIT which is highly ranked among all the IITs. They have a total of 880 seats comprising around 124 seats in Chemical Engineering, 117 seats in Civil Engineering, 116 seats in Mechanical Engineering, 98 seats in Metallurgical Engineering, and 87 seats in Computer Engineering.

IIT Madras

IIT Madras has the record of one of the oldest premier engineering institutions in the country. They have 838 seats in total consisting of 73 Chemical Engineering seats, 75 Mechanical Engineering seats, 63 Civil Engineering seats, 66 Electrical Engineering seats, and 30 Engineering Physics seats respectively.

IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi is another reputed IIT which is having the honor of the greatest environmental projects going on under Governmental assistance.

They have allotted 105 seats in Civil Engineering, 105 seats in Textile Technology, 75 seats in Chemical Engineering, 75 seats in Electrical Engineering, 67 seats in Production and Industrial Engineering, 68 seats in Computer Science and Engineering, and 68 seats in Mechanical Engineering respectively.

IIT Kharagpur

IIT Kharagpur is widely known for providing the maximum number of seats to engineering aspirants in India. They have numerous departments of engineering to opt for. Their total number of seats is 1341 to be exact.

Mechanical Engineering provides 67 seats, Civil Engineering and Electronics cum Electrical Engineering have 62 seats each, Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering have 55 seats each, Chemical Engineering has 52 seats, Mining Engineering has 40 seats, Architectural Engineering has 40 seats, Aerospace Engineering has 33 seats, Agricultural and Food Engineering has 35 seats, Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture specialization have 33 seats and Mining Safety Engineering has 18 seats respectively.

IIT Kanpur

IIT Kanpur has a total of 827 seats consisting of 130 seats in Electrical Engineering, 105 seats in Civil Engineering, 100 seats in Mechanical Engineering, 90 seats in Materials Engineering, 90 seats in Computer Science and Engineering, 50 seats in Aerospace Engineering, 40 seats in Biological Sciences and Bioengineering and 49 seats in Mathematics and Scientific Computing respectively.

IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee is another IIT with a greater volume of seats which cater to 1065 candidates in total. They have 140 seats for Electrical Engineering students, 110 seats for Chemical Engineering students, 135 seats for Civil Engineering students, 80 seats for Mechanical Engineering students, and 75 seats for Computer Science and Engineering as well as for Electronics and Communication Engineering streams respectively.

They have one coveted stream named Process Engineering with MBA which has around 35 seats for the aspirant students. Another offbeat stream named Polymer Science and Technology has 40 seats to fill in for the JEE qualifiers. This apart, Biotechnology has 45 seats to fill in. Applied Mathematics has 30 seats to fill in.

Geological Technology and Geophysical Technology have 30 seats each to cater to the wide range of students who have qualified IIT JEE Mains and Advanced exam securing all India ranks within top 7000.

Since the year 2008, six new institutes joined the prestigious league of IIT, which are namely IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bhubaneshwar, IIT Patna, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Jodhpur, and IIT Gandhinagar respectively. Each of these new IITs was inaugurated with 120-150 seats each, enhancing the total number of IIT seats to almost around 7000.

Among a total of 7000, general or unreserved students have only 5263 seats to fill in. From the rest of the seats, there are 2658 seats for OBC candidates, 1595 seats for scheduled caste candidates, and 797 seats for scheduled tribe candidates respectively. Rest 319 seats are reserved for physically disabled students who have qualified IIT JEE Advanced exam respectively.

IIT Hyderabad

IIT Hyderabad has a total of 220 seats garnering 40 seats for Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering each; 30 seats for Chemical Engineering; 25 seats for Civil Engineering, and 10 seats for Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering respectively.

IIT Bhubaneshwar consists of a total of 180 seats comprising 40 seats for Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering each. IIT Patna allots 200 seats in total encompassing 50 seats for Computer Science and Engineering, 50 seats for Electrical Engineering, 50 seats for Mechanical Engineering, 25 seats for Chemical Science and Technology, and 25 seats for Civil and Infrastructure Engineering respectively.

IIT Gandhinagar has a total of 150 seats consisting of 30 seats for all five streams namely Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Material Science and Engineering respectively. IIT Jodhpur has an entire 160 number of seats consisting 40 seats for Computer Science and Engineering, 40 seats for Electrical Engineering, and 40 seats for Mechanical Engineering respectively.

IIT Gandhinagar consists of 150 seats encompassing 30 seats each for Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Material Science, and Engineering respectively.

Not just in IT or Electronic field but IITians have contributed in almost every field in the world. IITs don’t just give the degree of Engineering but there is much more to what an IIT provides besides the degree.
