Case Story: From an average student to 6th rank in IIT-JEE

Nikhil Garg was an average student until a few years ago. His mother had doubts he would make it big in the future. But on Friday, after cracking the IIT JEE with a sixth all-India rank, Nikhil stands at the threshold of a steady, bright future. Though his mother is not alive to see his success, his father has never been more proud. Nikhil Garg has topped IIT JEE from Delhi Zone.

He started preparing for IIT JEE after he joined class XI in Central Academy in Kota. In fact, Nikhil had more reasons to celebrate as two of his school friends also made it to the top 10 list of IIT JEE. “I was just a little above average when I was in school.

But I had been preparing hard for the last two years and I knew I could crack JEE. My dad had tears in his eyes when he came to know about the result. I wish my mother could feel this happiness too,” says Nikhil on phone from Sirsa. Nikhil now wants to pursue Computer engineering at IIT Delhi.

He had scored 89.2% in class XII CBSE Board. Though his father is a pathologist and his elder brother is studying MBBS from Safdarjung Hospital in the city, Nikhil says his deep interest in technology since class X finally pushed him to the doors of IIT. My son was the best in Computers.

In the lower classes, he was not very good in subjects that needed cramming. But he was determined to make it to IIT,” says Praveen Garg, Nikhil’s father. Nikhil had gone to Kota in Rajasthan with a few friends from school and joined Bansal classes for his preparation. “We went to school for only four days in a week or sometimes attended only the important periods.”

“At JEE classes, we studied for three hours every day. They gave us a four-hour-long homework after each class. On the whole, we studied for at least eight hours every day, including self-study,” said Nikhil. The going was tough, but he never felt the pain as he didn’t have any time in the last two years. However, he says things became really difficult when his mother died of breast cancer last year.

“My father’s motivation kept me going. I now want to earn a lot of money and build a cancer hospital in Sirsa. I may go in for an MBA degree later as it is more lucrative, but I would look for job satisfaction more,” says Nikhil.
