CBSE Class 12 English Previous Year Papers

You scored 90 in Maths, you were able to touch that 89 silver lining in Chemistry and you even got 85 in Biology, but what’s that! you’ve stuck around in the 60’s when it comes to English.

Of course, you do not want your board mark sheet to be like this, do you?

Most of the students give much of their time preparing for tough subjects, but they forget one subject that not only needs attention but can also boost the percentage significantly.

It is the only subject that still remains a dream to score 100%. In the subjects like maths and science, one can still think to get 100 out of 100 with brains and luck, but it will take great discipline and an extreme presence of mind to even get close to 90’s in English.

Right techniques to prepare for the English board exam

As I said, it is very tough to score 90’s in English. But with the right techniques and practice, anyone can touch those magical numbers of the 90’s.

Good Handwriting = Good Marks

How many times you have heard your teacher saying that you will get 5 extra marks for good handwriting in exams? Well! if you are gifted with good handwriting then you can get way more than 5 marks in your board exam.

Examiners that check the copies are always in a rush, as they are paid according to the number of sheets they check. Therefore, they will not force themselves to look into an answer which is written in poor writing.

They will probably look at 1 or 2 lines, and if they don’t find anything important in those lines, then there is no way they will look any further. Therefore, you need to make sure that you write your answers as neat and clean as possible.

The Unseen Passages

Reading is key to answer any question in English, especially the unseen passages. You can save a lot of time by reading those unseen passages with focus. So give a deep look at the question paper, and then start your paper.

As the unseen passages can never be predicted and vary in every exam, therefore, the only way to prepare for them is to practice as much as possible. Try different books to practice them.

Formatting For Writing Skills

As you may know that almost half of the marks in the writing skills section are for right and proper formatting. Make sure that you do proper formatting of all the questions that you will attempt in the writing section.

If you are weak in making English sentences grammatically correct, then I will advise you to read newspapers, articles on the internet, and books to improve your English.

Since English is purely a subject of language, therefore, it is very important that you take special care of using your commas, full stops, capital, and small letters, etc very carefully, you never know where you may lose a nickel.

How to Improve English

To improve your writing skills, you also need to improve your imagination because you will face a lot of questions in which you will have to answer using your imagination. And to improve your image you can try writing your own stories. This will help you in a lot of other ways too.

Also, you can consider watching English movies and program series. This will increase your English speaking as well as writing skills, and it will also help in your imaginations.

Observe the language used in the answers of different books.

Exam day tips for English board

First Half of The Exam

First of all, you will need to take at least 10 minutes to read the question paper very carefully.

If you really read the paper with concentration, then you will see that you can answer the questions asked in the unseen passage section without wasting much of your time.

To make your answer sheet look filled, you can consider drawing lines on both sides of the answer sheet.

As mentioned above keep your handwriting very neat and clean, it will help you to earn more marks.

In the exam, time is the most valuable thing, therefore, do not attempt questions that are giving you hard times and are consuming too much of your time.

Second Half of The Exam

All the long questions that you will attempt should be given at least 3 to 4 lines of introduction.

In long answer type questions try to make answers in points if possible (though it is not compulsory).

In the writing section, makes sure you keep your formatting right and try to write only point-to-point answers.

Don’t leave any 8 to 10 marks question, try to write at least 10 to 12 lines in it even if you don’t know the answer. Maybe you will get 2 or 3 marks for it, but something is better than nothing.

Finally do not forget to go through your answer sheet, at least, ones to make sure you have given the right answers.

So take care of these points in the exam and I assure you that, you will surely score good marks in English.

  1. How to score 6 on 6 in paragraph questions?

  2. I have not attempting my english exam full, some of the questions are left even after full time of exam.

    1. Hello Jovan,
Clearly your problem is writing speed, you have to work on it. Also, don’t write big answers for question that do not carry much much marks, just write point to point.

To improve your writing speed you have to take lots of mock tests before board exams. after every 2 or 3 day pick a previous year question paper or sample question paper and treat as if that is your board exam.

  3. My problem is that I read all the questions of section c and i know the answer but i m unable to expand it. Somehow not to expand i lose my marks.

      Hello Pranshu,
try to remember the story or the chapter for which you are writing the answer, and write all the details of the events that relate to the questions. This way your answer will be expanded before you even know it.

      Hello Gourav,
Now that not much time is left for the board exam, therefore, i don’t think you should invest your precious time in improving handwriting. Instead invest that time in studying. Here are some tips that will not magically improve your writing, but it will make sure that you do not loose marks because of it:
      1. First of all let me tell you that CBSE do not deduct marks for bad handwriting. Even the checkers of CBSE board exams are advised not to let handwriting of a student effect his/her marks, meaning they will do every possible thing to understand what you wanted to write.

      2. Give at least 2 finger space between each word that you write. This will help teacher to understand better.

      3. Give at least 2 lines of gape after every answer.

      4. Try to use black pen to highlight important points, and draw lines wherever possible.

Try these tips in exam to make your writing look neat and clean if not attractive.

    1. Prof. Divyanshi Sharma

      Hi Anamika.
No one is weak at anything, but you are feeling so, because you might be in a habit of mugging up things or you might not be confident about yourself. Literature is all about thoughts. Whatever you have grasped from the chapter, you have to express it in your own words. So, start understanding that what the story is all about, and then write the answer. Start practicing this, you will find literature very interesting.
