How to Prepare for Mathematics of Class 12th Board Exam

Mathematics is a top scoring subject for class 12 CBSE board exams. If you follow a right strategy to prepare mathematics, you will surely get high marks in your exam.

Sometimes the paper is easy but lengthy and sometimes students reviewed it tough. Most of the questions are from the NCERT book. You must not overlook NCERT book while preparing from reference books. Here is a strategy to prepare for Math based on the previous year papers and the marking scheme. The paper will have questions of 1 mark, 2 marks, 4 marks, and 6 marks. If you understand the concept well and leave the question incomplete you will get marks for your right steps. So, you must try to learn the concepts of every topic of your syllabus.

How to Prepare for Mathematics of Class 12th Board Exam

Marking Scheme: Here is the marking scheme for the paper:

Unit1: Relation and Function (10 Marks)
Unit2: Algebra (13 Marks)
Unit3: Calculus (44 Marks)
Unit4: Vector and 3D (17 Marks)
Unit5: Linear Programming (06 Marks)
Unit6: Probability (10 Marks)

  • The highest scoring chapter is Calculus (Imagine 44% – You can pass the paper if you master only calculus for class 12).
  • Differential equation is the trickiest chapter of this unit. Be prepared for Calculus with NCERT Book first and then reference books for practice.
  • Vector and 3D is also a scoring chapter but mainly for science students. You have to work hard to understand the concepts of this unit if you are a non-science student.
  • NCERT book questions are ample for the first unit Relation and Function. This Unit is of 10 Marks. You should try to so this unit at last.
  • Only one question comes from the unit Linear Programming. This is an easy chapter.
  • Most important topics are Matrices, Differentiation, Integration, Relations, And Limit.

SYLLABUS DISCUSSION: UNITS and TOPICS

Unit 1: Relation and Function

The important topics from this unit are types of relation based, Composite function based, and inverse trigonometric functions. Graphs are also crucial in this unit including the graph of inverse trigonometric functions and their properties.

Range and Domain is also quite significant topics of this unit. This is a logical unit. You can do this unit in either the start of syllabus or at the end of it.

Unit2: Algebra
Questions mainly come as solving linear equation in 2 or 3 variables using inverse of matrix.
Determiners and Matrices are very important and scoring topics.

Unit3: Calculus
The fundamental theorems of calculus are very important. You should learn these in the standard form only.
The most important topics from this unit are continuity, differentiability, Rolle’s Theorem, Lagrange’s Theorem, derivative test, Maxima and Minima based questions, Integration, finding the area under simple curve, and the last but not the least Differential Equation.

Differential Equation is the scariest topic for most of the students of class 12. The Questions are considered very important including Order and Degree, Solving the differential equation, and many more. You should prepare each and every question related to the differential equation in order to get full marks in this unit.

Unit4: Vector and 3D

The main topics of this unit are direction ratio of a vector, position vector, and scalar product of vectors, cross products, and scalar triple product.
From 3D Geometry, you should learn various types of Lines as skew lines and coplanar lines. Vector equation and planes are also on the list of mainly asked questions.

Unit5: Linear Programming

Linear Programming is a very typical chapter. The important areas are Formulation of LP Problems and Graphical method to solve various problems in 2 variables.

Unit6: Probability

Probability is an off-beat chapter. This chapter is used to check your analytical skill. Conditional probability, probability distribution, Baye’s Theorem and Binomial distribution are the chief topics of this last unit of your syllabus.
Questions based on Mean and Variance is also asked in Previous Year CBSE Class 12TH Maths Exams.

“Make a note diary of all formulas, theorems, graphs, and properties of determiners and keep revising again and again till your exam day.”

Important Topics discussion

We analyze the pattern of questions asked in CBSE exam and make a list of topics that can fetch you maximum marks. Here you go:

  1. Equivalence Relations, Composite functions, Domain and Range of all trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions. The unit-1 and unit-2 is more of practice than of concepts. After solving NCERT Book question you must practice 2 or 3 reference books for practice more.
  2. Matrices, Inverse of Matrix, Solving Linear equation with determiners are very important and scoring topics. The only thing these questions demand is speed. These are very time-consuming questions. You must practice a lot to gain speed and accuracy in these questions. 1 question of determiner can kill most of your time on the exam. So, be careful and be ready.
  3. Cram all the theorems of Calculus and practice them many times before exam. The only way to crack calculus is to practice a lot and practice the same question many times. It is also a time killing unit but this unit is carrying the highest weightage of marks.
  4. Linear Programming is generally the simplest question of the paper. You can easily earn 5 marks from this unit. Just give it a try and get full marks.
  5. Vector and 3D require extra practice for arts and commerce students. Vectors are easier to solve for science background students. This unit is scoring once you understand the concepts.
  6. Probability is quite tough for most of the students. But luckily the questions asked are very straight and easy. You can find a theorem in your exam paper.

Math requires both understanding concepts and Practice. The more you practice, the more you score in Math. R.D Sharma, Together With, ML Khanna are the most sought-after reference books for practice math for class 12. You can find many sample paper and previous year paper books to revise the syllabus at the end.

Whether you are doing practice or preparation, previous year papers play an important role.
