Indian Army Rank Wise Salary 2024

Earlier the Indian army salary structure was tricky to understand, but with the 7th CPC and with the introduction of the pay matrix table, it has become quite easy to understand what are the salaries for different ranks in the Indian army. Here is the pay matrix for the army as per the 7th pay commission.

All the ranks in the Indian army fall under one of the levels given in the above table. The table describes the starting salary for each level. e.g if the level of the army rank is 3 then the starting salary of that rank will be Rs. 21700.

Rank Structure of the Indian army

All ranks of the Indian army can be distributed into 3 categories:

  1. Non Commissioned Officers (NCO)
  2. Junior Commissioned Officers (JCO)
  3. Commissioned Officers (CO)

Starting from the non commissioned officers, as we progress the ranks and salary of army personnel also increases. A non commissioned officer has the least authority in the rank hierarchy after sepoy. Now let’s discuss each and every rank and their salary in the Indian army.

Army salary

Indian Army Rank Wise Salary Structure After 7th Pay Commission

Not all the ranks have a direct entry in the army, in fact, there are very few ranks where direct entry through the different process is allowed, the rest of the ranks are given after promotion. Starting from the smallest or first rank (sepoy) we will move towards the highest rank (field marshal).

Training Period

Anyone who is recruited in the Indian army has to go for the training first irrespective of the post. The candidates are given a stipend instead of calling it salary. The stipend of the training period can be between 15000 to 21000, depending on the pay band of the rank in which the candidate has been recruited.

Starting salary (without allowances) — ₹ 21, 700

What are allowances?

Government employees are given compensation for activities that will need expenditure like, transportation facilities, House rental allowance(HRA) for house rents, etc. These are called extra allowances.

Apart from other facilities like housing, food, etc. an army soldier receives extra allowances for other things like, for Kit Maintenance, a soldier of Indian Army get Rs. 400 per month. Transport Allowance of Rs. 1600 to Rs 3200, Field Area Allowance Rs 25% of Basic Pay, Counterinsurgency Rs 6300, High Altitude Rs. 5600, Siachen Rs 14000, Flying Pay Rs 9000, Parachute Pay Rs 1200, Special Forces Rs 9000 per month, etc.

The sepoy is the initial rank in the Indian Army, but still, get a good amount of money as a monthly salary. Being a ground troop, the sepoy is the primary fighting force in the world. Our country is full of energetic youngsters who are recruited every year as a sepoy by open rallies in the Indian Army.

Anyone between 17 and a half to 21 years of age can be a soldier irrespective of caste, color, and creed. You Just have to pass the Metric and fit in the eligibility criteria in order to join the Indian Army as a sepoy. There are various trades for which you can apply as per your eligibility like, tradesman, GD, clerk, nursing assistant, technical, etc.

After applying online, you will need to attend the Bharti where candidates have to face certain tests and clear them to get recruited. This is known as PFT (physical fitness test). After PFT, comes a medical and written exam.

Based on all these tests, a final merit list is released and if your name is there in the merit list then you will be called for the training period.

Want to crack NDA in 1st attempt? checkout how you can do so.

If you are recruited as Soldier GD, then first you will undergo the training period. And this is how you will proceed:

Sepoy/rifleman > lance naik > naik > havildar > naib subedar > subedar > subedar major (SM) > honorary lieutenant > honorary captain.

If you don’t have the graduation degree, and didn’t have science in class 12th, and join the Indian army as a soldier GD, then SM is the highest post you will reach. And you will retire as Honorary captain (if reached the SM post).

Now, if you join the Indian army after clearing the NDA or CDS exam, then again, you will have to undergo the training period, and later this is how your post will increase:

Lieutenant > captain > major > lieutenant colonel > colonel > brigadier > major general > lieutenant general.

There are two other prestigious posts, but there are different criteria for them. Now let’s understand the difficult terms we talked about.

Understanding Government Salary Structure Of India According to 6th CPC

Let me make it simple for you. The amount that you get on your hand in cash is gross salary, and the gross salary is the sum of components like grade pay, basic pay, monthly allowances, etc. Or we can say that the salary of Government employees is the sum of different components, i.e. basic pay, grade pay, dearness allowance, house rent allowance, and other miscellaneous allowances.

What Is Grade Pay And Basic Pay?

Grade pay is the amount that government employees receive depending on the category, pay band,  and a class of employee. Grade pay is calculated on the basis of the position and class of an employee according to the 7th pay commission.

Basic pay is the sum of grade pay and pay in the pay band, i.e Basic pay = grade pay + pay in the pay band.

Difference Between Basic Pay And Grade Pay

Let me clear the basic difference between Basic pay and Grade Pay:

  • Grade pay remains fixed until the next promotion, while on the other hand, basic pay changes every year.
  • Grade pay gets changed with respect to ability and position while the pay scale is used for the measurement of pay.
  • Grade pay is a new term in the 6th pay commission. Basic pay is the minimum remuneration given to the employee which changes from time to time.

What have we learned?

After reading the salary packages of the Indian Army, I hope, the view gets clearer for you. I don’t think that there should be any doubts in your mind regarding whether to join the Army or not.

Our Armed forces always welcome the hard-working and deserving aspirants in their departments. Now, the choice is yours.

    1. Hi Mangesh.
As, you have mentioned that you have joined Indian army at soldier GD post so now you cannot change your trade to education havildar. It is good that you look forward to become an officer but for that you will have to clear ACC exam. Indian army gives opportunity to the serving soldiers who aspires to become an officer through ACC(army cadet college) Exam. The selection for admission to ACC is based on a written test and subsequent selection via service selection board. The nature of training at ACC is same as that of the NDA and ACC candidates complete there 3 years degree course while training. The age limit for this exam is 20-27 years with minimum two years of service. The education qualification required is 10+2 Pattern Class 12th pass or Equivalent. Should have qualified ACC written test. So, you will have to serve at GD post for at least 2 years and only then you can apply for this exam.

  57. Hello sir. Your site is really helpful for army aspirants. You provide everything for a serious aspirant.
I want to know about promotion criteria of army clerk and the salary structure. I am very eager to know is it same like GD post?

We are happy to help you. Once you have joined Indian army in clerk post you will begin as sepoy then to Naik after that you will be promoted as Havildar, Naib Subedar and finally to Major Subedar and the same goes for Soldier GD post. But if aspire to become an officer then you can give various exam which are conducted by Indian army for serving soldiers like ACC exam, PC(SL) exam and SCO exam but each exam have different criteria which you must fulfill. In the above article we have mentioned that salary structure also.

    1. Hi Sumit.
First of all I would tell you that if you are looking forward to join armed forces then you have to be dedicated about it. 1. Prof. Divyanshi Sharma

      Hi Shiva.
As, you have mentioned that you have completed your B.Tech(graduation)and you aspires to join Indian army then your best option is CDS(Common Defense Services)exam. CDS is a written exam conducted twice every year by UPSC. It is meant to select officers for Army, Navy and Air Force. 70. Hello sir,
I am pursuing my B.sc degree and I am in my 2nd year as of now. I want to get into the Indian army and the only possible option at present is the CDS. But I would like to mention that I did not have math as my subject in class 12 and so I wont be able to clear the IMA but I’ll give my best into OTA. The doubt that I have is, the officers recruited from OTA have a short service commission so is there any way or parameter that can be fulfilled to get the permanent commission afterwards?
    Waiting for your reply sir.
    Thank you.

    1. Prof. Divyanshi Sharma

      Hi Subhagya.
It is not rare but it is common that those apply for PC, get it but there is an exception. Your performance in last ten years will be reviewed. If you perform right from beginning, that you got to get absorbed in permanent commission, it will automatically be reflected in your performance. If you make a decision that you got to quit after ten years, same will come in your ACR. You get into army based on merits, you get promoted in army based on merits so obviously you would get permanent commission if you have merits. If the performance of all of your SSC batch mates is good, all will get absorbed. If you are left with only option of joining Short Service Commission, go ahead and keep working like if you are permanent commission officer, you would be absorbed in to permanent commission.

If you get selected for soldier GD post you will get promoted from sepoy/refileman to naik and then to higher post.
